A presentation of a 1953 Scorecard to Paul Argyle from Glynn Miller, one of the matchday players, took place in August before the Devon Over 50's fixture held at Westward Ho! Glynn Miller of Christchurch, Dorset was the Club's special match day guest on Thursday August 18 when during a visit to the area he presented us with a copy of an original typed scoresheet and match report of a game he had played in 58 years ago for Keble College, Oxford, against a then Bideford & District XI on July 8th 1953. The supplied image of the Colleges Cricket XI - taken two years earlier in 1951 - shows Glynn standing first right in the back row. Three other men in this photograph; N.Evans (2nd left back row) P.Dickens (seated first left and P.Briant (standing 5th left back row) also played in the same match.
Batting first on a lively wicket we made 139 all out - a very decent score in those days - Bayliss top scoring with 50. Alf Robinson the Clubs star batsman and all rounder – who had terrorised Kebles’ bowling attack in previous encounters - was dismissed for an ignominious second ball duck! However he did later take four Keble wickets in a narrow seven run victory. Recorded full match anaylsis will be available to examine when the framed scoresheet goes on display in the clubhouse.
Paul said…”We are very grateful to Glynn for this donation to the Club Archive. Early period and pre-amalgamation ephemera relating to the Club is rare and difficult to find so I was very pleased to learn that Glynn had decided to make this gesture after seeing the appeal on the website”. He also added “This document represents the earliest surviving and official scorecard of a representative Club match ever played at Westward Ho! so in historical terms its an extremely important and interesting piece of memorabilia and it will form an integral part of the Clubs displayed heritage and exhibits.
