Tony Miller

Tony was associated with the Hatherleigh Club as an umpire in the 1970’s and was one of the umpires on the Devon League Panel when it was first formed in 1982.  Previously Clubs had appointed their own umpires. By this time he was living in the Tavistock area and became very interested in the grass roots of cricket.  He worked hard to establish a good Colts Cricket Section at the Tavistock Club, besides assisting with the umpiring duties.  He retired from the Devon League in 1986 and from umpiring in 1988.

Tony was a Gloucestershire man and his home town was Cheltenham where he frequently watched the cricket festival there played on the College ground in August.  In 1991 he answered our call for a Newsletter Editor and held the position until 1998 when our present editor, Barry Warren, took over.  He was made a Life Member of the DCUS at our AGM in 1992.

Sadly, Tony died on 2nd January 2007, but left a legacy in his will for the benefit of DCUS.  Tony writing in his first Newsletter said I quote “I retired from umpiring three years ago, but I am still in love with the game, and concerned with the welfare of my friends in the middle.”

This bequest was fully discussed at three Management Committee Meetings under the Chairmanship of Graham Curson, who was invited to take the Chair by the Chairman, David Moseby.  It was decided to purchase a trophy to be awarded annually to a DCUS member who had contributed greatly to the development of youth cricket as an umpire, coach or in any other capacity.
