Vitality U19 Club T20 2022
U19s finals day 2022 Cornwood CC Sunday 11th September
Today our Bideford Falcons played the semi final against the very strong Heathcote Chargers.
The game was delayed by a day due to the death of Queen Elizabeth II and started with a one minute silence for reflection.
Fionn Captained the U19s admirably which was missing several of our usual side. Heathcote won the toss and decided to bat. They put on a score of 191-8 which hides some excellent bowling. Taking 8 wickets was a superb bowling effort and backed up with great all round fielding. Every bowler took at least one wicket with Adam and Damon bagging two each!
We made a great effort chasing and batting out our overs. We came up short at 111-6. Jake gave them a taste of their own medicine scoring 34 off 28 and hitting the biggest 6 of the day back over the bowler! Not bad for someone who hasn’t played since the start of the season.
Although it was a loss on paper, it was a great result against unarguably the best U19 side in the Competition. Bearing in mind, in the final, Heathcote bowled the other semi final winners out for 40, and went on to chase it without loss in less than 4 overs, our result is one that the team were rightly proud of.
As always, every game in this year’s competition was played with great enthusiasm and team spirit. The club’s future is in good hands with this group on youngsters coming through, and will only get stronger. They are already relishing the thought of next season’s competition.
Thanks to everyone who contributed on and off the pitch to a successful campaign!

U19s vs Filleigh at home
Final and deciding game of the North league eventually happened at the third attempt. Any of the three teams in the league could end up winning and going to finals day on 10th September at Cornwood.
Filleigh won the toss and decided to bat which was always going to be the best decision with light going to be an issue later in the evening. However, our bowlers did a great job restricting what appeared to be a strong batting line up to 129-5. Pick of the bowlers was Jim with 4-0-16-2 and Jack was unlucky not to bag a couple of wickets with 4-0-17-0.
In reply, Julian and Jack opened and managed the run rate to perfection. This was certainly necessary as with 6 overs to go, the game needed to be stopped due to very bad light and player safety. With Jack retired on 53 and Julian not out on 28, after some hasty calculations, our friend Duckworth-Lewis confirmed that 96-0 was enough for the win.
So in the tightest of leagues, with all three teams on the same points at the end, net run rate put us on top of the pile.
Congratulations to the whole squad who have played great cricket in a good spirit as always. Everyone has made a vital contribution when called upon.
Thanks to Jess for scoring, Paul for umpiring so admirably, Anne and Laura for cheffing, and all those who came and helped on the night.
Thanks to Jamie for managing to rescue the wicket from the night before.

Vitality U19 Club T20 2021
Great win for the U19s first match last night (24th June).
Thank you to everyone for supporting the team, creating a really good atmosphere with music, laughter, a few drinkies and cheering; and to Bill for umpiring.
Tight bowling from Jack, with Tom and Ben in support, dragged us back after Hatherleigh got off to a flying start. And the top four batters did the job for us, chasing down 161 in just 18.3 overs, winning by eight wickets.

Our U19s took North Devon all the way in their 2nd Vitality T20 match on Wednesday 21st July. Batting first, James Hayter and skipper Oliver Hannam put on over 100 for the first wicket til James retired on 52 off 49 balls, 5x4s and 1x6. Olly carried on to get 42 off 45 (3x4s) but the only other batter to reach double figures was Tom with 13* off 6 (2x4s). 156-4 off 20.
Although we used 9 bowlers (great to give everyone a go!) we couldn't stop the flow of runs, only Jack giving away less than 3 per over. But a very tidy spell from Jim made sure North Devon had to work hard for their victory, which they eventually reached with just 4 balls left. You can watch the whole match here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5T4Q9J5VmP0
Thank you to the supporters who came down to cheer the lads on, much appreciated, and to Bill for umpiring. Hope you all enjoyed the evening. Next up - Filleigh at home on Tuesday 17th August - let's make it a night to remember!
